Recognizing the signs of depression

Recovery and What to Do

There are many things than can be done to alleviate depression. Some require lifestyle changes, others involve professional treatment. Start with changing habits and living patterns and see if there are good results. Each day can be a small step forward towards a happier life.

• Talk to Loved Ones

Reaching out to friends, family and loved ones is a good place to start. Failing to do this will lead to isolation that worsens depression symptoms. Be specific about how you feel so they can react appropriately to your feelings. Start with people who really care and listen to you.

• Exercise Regularly

In some cases regular exercise can be as effective as medications like antidepressants. This is because it releases chemicals in the brain that naturally enhance moods. Feeling good about your body will help too. If this seems overwhelming, start simple with an activity like walking or biking.

• Eat Health Foods
Stay away from junk foods, sugar, processed carbohydrates, unhealthy fats, and even alcohol and caffeine if you can. Replace your eating habits with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, healthy vegetables, and omega-3 rich foods such as fish (salmon, tuna, etc), walnuts and eggs.

• Rejoin the World
Try socializing more with good friends, going outside more often, working on hobbies and finding some kind of work if you don’t have a job. You may have to force yourself but in the end these are all going to improve your quality of life.

Therapy

If additional help is needed, find a mental health professional to talk with about your feelings. This will provide insight and motivation and ultimately a deeper understanding of depression and how to cope with it.

Medication

Medication like antidepressants can help stabilize moods and give a new perspective on life., especially when used in combination with other lifestyle changes. Talk to your doctor or a psychiatrist if you seek medication, especially if your feeling violent or suicidal
